U.S.A. Seizes 25 Tons of Pot in San Diego

Federal authorities seized 25 tons of marijuana and discovered an 1,800-foot-long tunnel for smugglers that led from Mexico to a warehouse in San Diego. The discovery was the latest example of the often-extreme methods used by Mexican cartels to smuggle drugs past the umpteen number of law enforcement in the San Diego border area. No one was arrested during the building raids and U.S. authorities said that the street value of the marijuana totaled more than $20 million.

20 million dollars worth of ganja? O how proud Marley would be! All kidding aside, this kind of issue really doesn't require much of an opinion. The bad guys are going to get what they deserve and there are going to be quite a few lonely stoners out there tonight!

11.25 Million Dollar Winners Give Away Money to Charity

Allen and Violet Large, living near the city of Halifax, recently acquired over 11.25 million dollars in lottery winnings. Both well beyond their 70's, Allen and Violet gave 98% of their winnings to charities and local families in need of money (the remaining 2% was saved for emergencies). Their reasoning was that, “We’re not big livers, we don’t live high, we’re country. We weren’t born with a silver spoon in our mouths.”

Now that ladies and gentlemen, is legitimate generosity. To think that after winning 11 million dollars people aren't thinking about themselves. Now there were a lot of comments on this particle issue and many people seemed to suggest that since these people were in their final years of life they had no use for the money and they really had no other option than to give it away. Are you serious? That argument has no validity at all! In fact, wouldn't it make more sense in their retirement? They could now blow all the money in the world (literally) and not have to worry about a thing! They could successfully say to God up in heaven, "God, we were born in a stable, and died in a mansion!". So that total dismisses that argument! I'm just happy these folks made the decision they made and truly made their world a better place.

Jobs Scarce for High School Dropouts

To Graduate or to Not

Recently published study by Statistics Canada indicates that one in four dropouts aged 20 to 24 were unable to find work in the thick of the recession – and that the gap between their jobless rate and their counterparts who graduated widened. Just before the downturn, the jobless rate for dropouts was 18 per cent, more than double the rate of 8.4 per cent among recent high school graduates who were not in school. In the deepest part of the recession, the rate for dropouts hit 21.3 per cent, and climbed further to 23.2 per cent early this year.

That’s about twice as much as for recent high school completers who were not enrolled in school.

So what is there to think about this? As a gr. 11 student I can't think of a worse situation to be in than dropping out of high school because of some moronic instinct and end up not being able to fulfill my intended purpose. Also revealed in the study was that the dropout rates among young immigrants tended to be lower than the rates of their Canadian-born counterparts. Is this my silver lining? No, I believe my saving grace is knowing that I won't have to experience the thrashing/verbal appraisal I'd receive for not completing my high school education!

Chilean Miners Rescue: all 33 men out

Chilean Miners seated along with Chilean President Sebastian Pinera (third from right)

"We had the strength. We had the spirit. We had the courage to fight". Those were the fighting words of a recently rescued Chilean miner who along with 32 other comrades had been stuck 2,300 feet underground for 69 days. All this occurred when the 33 men became trapped after a shaft collapsed in the gold and copper mine near the northern city of Copiapo. It is not clear what caused the crash. 69 days later as the world held its breath, all 33 men were rescued relatively unscathed from their ordeal.

I had watched this tale unfold right from the start and I was quite relieved as the last miner was pulled to the surface. But right from the start I couldn't help but think, what sensations these men were going to become. Not only were they the talk of nearly every prime time talk show host, but it seemed everyone had heard about their situation! If only these men knew! But, as soon as all the miners were brought up and hospitalized a statement was released by one of the family members saying
that the miners have agreed to divide all their earnings from interviews, media appearances, movies or books. I said, WHAT? They were expecting to be paid major cash outs from the media? Now that's just greedy! And to make a movie out of it? Guess which blockbuster I won't be attending...

Basketball: Started With a Bucket and Ended with Stardom

2 basketball players from the 90's

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world alongside football, soccer, hockey and baseball. All of which are sports I love to watch!

Vertical jump dunk
This year my favourite teams going into the season are the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. Now I know the first thing that comes to mind when you mention all these teams (at least the first two) is that I'm a classic band wagoner Well, so what? If I favour the obviously more potent team, does that put me in the wrong? With the new triad of Bosh-Wade-James, who could stop them? Can the Lakers with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Derek Fisher stop them? And as for Boston, I was born in Boston, so its almost a given that I support them. But who will take the championship this year? We'll just have to wait and see...

Ray Lewis- Defining Bestiality

Ray Lewis- Defining Bestiality
(click title to view video, if interested)

At 6ft 1, 250 lbs, its safe to say Ray Lewis isn't your ordinary Joe. Since being drafted to the NFL by the Baltimore Ravens in 1996, Lewis's football career has been one long highway of success. From being selected into 11 pro bowls and winning Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, Lewis has seen it all.

So what do the Ravens have to fear this year? I believe with the reinstatement of Michael Vick (QB) to the Philadelphia Eagles, and with Donovan McNabb(QB) carrying his Redskins, they will be the greatest contenders for the Super Bowl XLIV title!
